'Hamilton' sets new record clinching 16 Tony nominations

The musical has received a staggering 16 Tony nominations

The Broadway sensation
In the biggest not-shocking shocker since Jon Snow opened his eyes, Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton — the Broadway sensation that's sweeping the nation, and the Pulitzers, and... everything else — just broke another record.

The musical has received a staggering 16 Tony nominations, officially making it the most-nominated musical in Tony history. Previous record-holders The Producers and Billy Elliot only managed to scrape together a mere 15 nods apiece. Losers!

Hamilton's nods include mentions in every major musical category, including Original Score (Miranda), Book (Miranda), Actor in a Leading Role (Miranda and his Aaron Burr, Leslie Odom, Jr.), Actress in a Leading Role (Phillipa Soo), Direction (Thomas Kail), and, of course, Best Musical.

It got an extra numbers boost from the Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical category, where three of the show's supporting players — Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff and Christopher Jackson — scored nominations.

Somehow, the show missed out on the Regional Theatre and Lifetime Achievement awards. Better luck next year, Lin!

Other major takeaways from the Tony nominations include a snub for Broadway mainstay Audra McDonald (who's already got six of these things), big days for Hamilton competitors Shuffle Along (ten noms) and She Loves Me (eight), and nods for big-name celebrities including Jeff Daniels (Best Actor in a Play fro Blackbird), Jessica Lange (Best Actress in a Play for Long Day's Journey Into Night) and Lupita Nyong'o (same category for Eclipsed).

Hamilton will go for broke — and a shot at breaking The Producers' record-making 12 Tony wins — at the awards, airing on CBS Sunday, June 12. For a full list of nominees, visit tonyawards.com.
