Composer Ludovico Einaudi has transposed human concern about warming temperatures into song.
This week, as part of a Greenpeace campaign, the Italian composer took to the Arctic Ocean — specifically Svalbard, Norway — to perform a piece he wrote titled “Elegy for the Arctic,” which you can watch below:
Set against the formidable Wahlenbergbreen glacier, Einaudi’s performance, uploaded to YouTube on June 19, coincides with this week’s OSPAR Commission meeting in Tenerife, Spain. There, delegates will deliberate over a proposal to safeguard approximately 10 percent of the Arctic Ocean.
At present, there are no legal safeguards meant to protect the ocean, which to Greenpeace is problematic as rising temperatures and ice coverage loss means that the Arctic has become more popular with nations and private actors seeking to exploit its oil reserves and fish populations.
