On the night of Lincoln's assassination, the Secret Service was implemented.
It wasn't until the assassination of William McKinley that they decided to include presidential protection to their agenda.

The original purpose of the Secret Service was to find and destroy counterfeit money being used.
3. Rare Death.
Surprisingly, only one Secret Service agent was killed in the line of duty.
