Never Eat or Drink These Things when You're on Medications

What you can and can’t take with the med

Things you should avoid
When you take prescription meds, you have to be careful about what you’re eating and drinking, as well as what supplements and other medications you’re taking.

That’s because certain meds interact in a negative way, which can lead to health consequences and even death.

Anytime your doctor prescribes a new medication, make sure you ask him about what you can and can’t take with the med.

It’s also a good idea to keep the information that comes with the pills on hand in case you need to refer to them.

In general, these are things you should avoid.

1. Pain Pills and Booze Don’t Mix

You’ve probably heard that this combination is a big time no-no. When you’re on pain pills, it’s a good idea to avoid drinking cocktails or limit yourself to just one. Pain pills and alcohol work in similar ways inside your brain, so mixing them can make you extremely drowsy. This can be life threatening if you plan to drive and can be pretty inconvenient if you have kids to care for, a job to go to or schoolwork to finish up.

2. Limit Dairy Foods if You Take Antacids

Who among us has never popped an antacid when a little bit of heartburn flares? That’s probably fine, but if you regularly take Tums or something similar, you should probably be limiting the amount of dairy foods you eat. Why? Because most antacids contain calcium, which is great, but too much of this nutrient can lead to kidney issues. If you take antacids every day, cut back on how much cheese, milk and yogurt you eat.

3. Grapefruit Can Be a Problem with Several Meds

For some reason, grapefruit can cause your body to absorb more of the active ingredient in certain antidepressants and antihistamines. Having more of those ingredients in your system than you’re used to can really mess with your health. Grapefruit also increases the risk of side effects from cholesterol meds. Have an orange instead to satisfy your citrus fruit craving.

4. Don’t Mix Bananas with ACE Inhibitors

ACE inhibitors are commonly prescribed for high blood pressure. They work to lower blood pressure and can also benefit people who are in heart failure. However, if you mix them with bananas, you could bring your blood pressure down too far, which can be very dangerous for your health. Bananas are rich in potassium, which plays a role in blood pressure so mixing them with ACE inhibitors can be scary.

5. Tetracycline Antibiotics and Milk Are a Bad Combo

Tetracycline antibiotics can be used to treat a variety of conditions, but taking them with milk can prevent your body from absorbing the active ingredients, thereby lowering the benefits from taking them. In fact, if you are on this type of antibiotics, experts suggest waiting an hour or two before eating anything.

6. Drugs for Bacterial Infections Shouldn’t Be Taken with Fermented or Pickled Foods

Contracting a bacterial infection often means you have to take meds to treat the problem. However, the active ingredient in these meds can cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure if you take them with foods that contain tyramine. Tyramine can be found in foods that include salami, pickles, sauerkraut, anchovies and processed cheeses.

7. Never Eat Walnuts when You’re on Thyroid Meds

If you have thyroid problems, taking meds if often necessary to keep you healthy. However, eating walnuts while you’re on those meds can keep the drugs from being fully absorbed into your system. Other high-fiber foods can cause the same problems so talk to your doctor about increasing your dosage if you eat a lot of foods that contain a lot of fiber.
