Now, thanks to the latest in avian orthopedics, Cecily has a chance to run—or at least strut. Specialists at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts plan to amputate the hen’s bum appendage and replace it with a prosthesis crafted on a 3-D printer.
Cecily’s former owner, Andrea Martin, happens to be a chicken conservationist, and the operation is due to set her and Cecily’s new household back $2500. It’s believed to be the first surgery of its kind performed on domestic fowl; a Brazilian zoo fitted a pink flamingo for an artificial leg in June.
