Amazing Bridge Turns Into a Tunnel and Connects Denmark and Sweden

Important transport route for the 3.7 million inhabitants

The longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe
This amazing engineering marvel turns from a bridge into a tunnel to connect Denmark en Sweden. The Øresund Bridge is the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe, and connects two major metropolitan areas: Copenhagen, the Danish capital city, and the major Swedish city of Malmö.

The bridge joins Drogden tunnel on the artificial island of Peberholm that is an interesting site on it’s own. The island was constructed from material dredged from the seabed and most of the 4 km tunnel was built by concrete elements cast on land and towed out and lowered into a dredged trench. With a result that more than 500 different species of plants were identified on the island.

The bridge opened in july 2000 and is an important transport route for the 3.7 million inhabitants surrounding it.
