Echigo-Tsumari is a mountainous region of 760km2 in Niigata Prefecture about two hours by train from Tokyo. People have been living in the communion with nature for over generations. And it’s at this place, with over 200 participating villages, where the largest art festival in the world is held.
The ambitious art festival started back in 2000 and just wrapped up its 6th iteration. Curator and Director Fram Kitagawa tried to look back with photographs at the last 15 years and bundled it all in a book called Art Place Japan..
