4 Steps To Sanely Purge Your Wardrobe

Removing excess clothing from your closet

The process of sorting
It’s a classic conundrum: you have so many clothes and not a single thing to wear.

When your closet is overflowing with clothes old, new and unused, many people find themselves reaching for the same shirt and pants combo they always wear, avoiding the process of sorting through their piles of clothing altogether. You end up wearing the same outfit over and over again and your closet remains stuffed with clothing that you never wear.

The problem is, when you decide to declutter your closet, you find it difficult to let go of clothing you either feel sentimental about or that you feel guilty about tossing because you only wore it once. After all, who’s to say that you won’t wear the zebra print dress you bought for a Halloween costume again at some point (even though in your heart of hearts, you know you never will)? Removing excess clothing from your closet and keeping only the clothes that you like to wear and that you know look good on you will make getting ready in the morning less stressful. But it’s hard to know where to start.

Luckily, Danny Dover wrote an incredibly helpful piece called How To Sanely Purge Your Wardrobe. He breaks down the process into four easy steps that will not only help you pick which clothes to keep and which to let go, but which will also alleviate the guilt of getting rid of clothes.

The four steps are:
  • Identify your clothing requirements
  • sort your clothing into four piles (keep, donate, trash, box)
  • consolidate your clothing by brand/style
  • schedule reoccurring mini purges.
These steps can easily be applied to decluttering in general. Dover recommends establishing a weekly mini purge and donation run (Donation Sundays) to prevent excess stuff from building up. Doing one big initial purge and then minimizing the build up of clutter bit by bit will prevent things from getting out of control.
