Deciding where to live with your family can be tough, and you'll want to consider factors like rent and safety. Apartment List, an online rental marketplace, recently put together a ranking of the best large US cities for families. The results are based off a number of factors, including FBI data on violent and property crimes, the percentage of median income required to rent a two-bedroom apartment, high school graduation rates, and the percentage of people under 18 (called a child friendliness score).

Each city's suburbs were also taken into account when conducting the study. Here are some of the best places to settle down with your family.

20. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: Minneapolis performed better than 48% of the other cities in terms of crime and child friendliness, and it boasts a high school graduation rate of 68%. About 32% of median income goes towards rent here.

19. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: Chicago performed better than 62% of the other cities in terms of crime, and better than 69% for child friendliness. It has a high school graduation rate of 73%, and 34% of median income goes towards rent.

18. NEW YORK, NEW YORK: New York had the best crime rate per 100,000 residents. That being said, it only performed better than 24% of the other cities for child friendliness, and 37% of median income goes towards rent. Its high school graduation rate came in at 70%.

17. CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA: While Charleston performed better than 52% of cities for crime, it only performed better than 31% for child friendliness. Its graduation rate is 77%, and 33% of median income goes towards rent.

16. DENVER, COLORADO: Denver performed better than 59% of cities for its crime score, and better than 62% of cities for its child friendliness score. It has a graduation rate of 70%, and 31% of the median income goes towards rent.

15. NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE: Nashville performed better than 38% of the other cities in terms of both crime and child friendliness. Nashville's graduation rate is 84%, and 33% of median income goes towards rent.

14. BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT: Bridgeport scored high in its crime rate, performing better than 90% of cities, while its child friendliness score was higher than 41% of other cities. Its graduation rate is 78%, with 39% of median income going towards rent.

13. OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA: Oklahoma City's crime score was only better than 21% of other cites, but it performed better than 76% of cities in terms of child friendliness. Oklahoma City has a graduate rate of 76%, with 30% of income going towards rent.

12. SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA: San Francisco performed poorly in the crime category, with the city scoring higher than only 31% of the others. The same goes for its child friendliness score, which performed better than only 10% of the other cities. That being said, the city has a high school graduation rate of 83%, and 31% of median income goes towards rent.

11. KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI: Kansas City performed better than 41% of other cities in terms of its crime and better than 83% in terms of child friendliness. It has a graduation rate of 77%, with 31% of median income going towards rent.

10. HOUSTON, TEXAS: Houston has a relatively high crime rate per 100,000 people, performing better than only 14% of the other cities. That being said, it has a high child friendliness score and a high school graduation rate of 81%, and 30% of median income goes towards rent.

9. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Los Angeles performed better than 93% of cities for crime and better than 52% for child friendliness. It has a graduation rate of 79%, while 38% of median income goes towards rent.

6. CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA: Charlotte performed better than 45% of cities for crime, and better than 79% for child friendliness. Its graduation rate is 81%, and 30% of median income goes towards rent.

5. PHOENIX, ARIZONA: Phoenix had a pretty average crime score, performing better than 55% of other cities, while it performed better than 93% in terms of child friendliness. It has a high school graduation rate of 79%, with 30% of median income going towards rent.

4. SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA: San Diego performed better than 97% of cities in terms of crime, and better than 45% of cities in terms of child friendliness. It boasts a high school graduation rate of 87%, with 35% of median income going towards rent.

3. SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA: Sacramento performed better than 79% of cities in terms of its crime rate and better than 72% in terms of child friendliness.

2. SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA: San Jose came in at second, with a crime score that was better than 86% of other cities and a child friendliness score that was better than 59% of cities. It has a high school graduation rate of 83%, and 31% of median income is required for rent.

1. DALLAS, TEXAS: Dallas took the top spot with a crime score that was better than 73% of the other cities and a child friendliness score that was higher than 97% of the other cities. The high school graduation rate here is 88%, and 29% of the median income goes towards rent.
